Last year, more than 1,475 donors contributed nearly $450,000 to the Blue & Gold Fund, providing essential funding that impacted our programs in the areas of scholarships, coaching excellence, recruiting and team travel, helping our 345 student-athletes excel in the classroom and on the field of competition. Because of donors’ support, we celebrated several student-athletes and program highlights dur- ing the 2019-20 year, including: – Canisius won the Battle of the Bridge all-sports competition against Niagara University for the 10th consecutive year. – The Canisius volleyball team advanced to its second-straight ap- pearance in the MAAC Volleyball Championships semifinal round. Ad- ditionally, former Griff Leah Simmons , the 2019-20 Canisius Female Athlete of the Year, became the first player in program history to earn All-MAAC First Team honors in back-to-back seasons – The men’s cross country team extended its streak of winning the Little Three Championship to 14 straight years, with former runner Nick Neamtu winning the race for the second-straight year. – Former women’s soccer goalkeeper Alana Rossi closed out her career as a Griff with the school’s career shutout record – topping a previous record set in 1989. – Both the men’s and women’s bas- ketball teams celebrated the College’s 150th anniversary by announcing All- Sesquicentennial Teams. The teams, which were voted on by fans online, were honored during halftime of home games during the 2019-20 basketball seasons. – Former Canisius point guard Malik Johnson set the program’s record for career games started (131) and career assists (620). He also graduated as just the third three-year team captain in school history. – Hockey freshman Keaton Mastrodonato led the nation and tied a program record with three short- handed goals during the 2019-20 campaign. – All 20 varsity programs boast a team grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2020 spring semester. The school’s 393 student-athletes combined to record a department grade point average of 3.41 in the spring 2020 session, highlighted by 58 students who posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester. – Additionally, 236 student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
